Technology :
The Bank will be constantly monitoring and upgrading its technology to make sure that your accounts are absolutely secure. The Bank maintains the highest standards as far as security technology is concerned, some of which are :

  • 128 bit SSL encryption - This is the highest level of security available for communication and transactions on the Internet. SSL encryption allows the Bank to encrypt information, so that when it travels through the internet, it is scrambled and cannot be accessed by anyone else. SSL also ensures information is sent to the correct place and that it is not tampered with.
  • Verisign Certification - This NetBanking site is certified by VeriSign as a VeriSign Secure Site. VeriSign, Inc. is the leading provider of trusted infrastructure services to websites, enterprises, electronic commerce service providers and individuals. (www.verisign.com)
  • Secure mail: The 128 bit SSL encryption used ensures that the mail facility available on Netbanking gives you a higher level of security for your communication with the bank, as opposed to general email facilities available on the internet.

Customer Access Security :

  • User ID and Passwords - Every customer requires a User ID and a Login Password to access NetBanking. In addition a Transaction Password is required for conducting any transactions on NetBanking.
  • Unauthorised access - In case there are five unsuccessful attempts to log in or transact on your NetBanking, the login/transaction password is disabled to prevent any unauthorised access. Furthermore, if you have logged into NetBanking and have not used the application for 10 minutes, the system automatically logs you out. This is to prevent any unauthorised access of your account, in case you have left your computer unattended, without having logged out of NetBanking.

d Why does some information of my account show even after I have logged out of my NetBanking session?
Browser software often "caches" pages as you look at them, meaning that some pages are saved in your computer's temporary memory. Therefore, you may find that clicking on your back button on your browser shows you a saved version of a previously viewed page. Please keep in mind that caching in no way affects the security of your confidential User ID or Password. If you use your computer in a public place, please close all your browser pages before leaving your session.
s

d How can I view (manually) the Bank's NetBanking site certificate?

It is proposed to implement various security measures to provide a safe Internet Banking product for the customers. Implementing SSL for the NetBanking web server is one such measure proposed. SSL serves two functions viz. authenticating the web server and encrypting the communication channel.
Risks
Web spoofing: In this type of attack web users may be led into an impostor web-site that looks similar to the genuine web site and thus could be coned into revealing sensitive information including user IDs and passwords.

There are various ways to detect / avoid the above risks though most of these are required to be initiated/acted upon by the customers and hence rely on customer discretion. As a security measure the Bank has implemented site identification measure in terms of SSL certification. However, for the customers to be sure that they are communicating with the Bank's authentic
webserver they need to take due care to check for relevant information before using the service or providing confidential information.

Checking the site-certificate is one of the ways to ensure the above and possibly to avoid being a victim of web spoofing attack. Most browsers provide options to verify the site certificate.

d Why is this additional ‘security question requirement’ feature added to your netbanking?
In order to further enhance safety of your online transactions, we have introduced another level of authorization for certain types of transactions. As a part of this feature, you will be given a choice of questions from which you shall be required to store answers for any three questions of your choice. This will be a one time activity required to be repeated only if you forget the answers stored. While doing such transactions, in addition to your transaction password, you will be asked any one of these three questions - answers for which as stored, will be known only to you.

d What transactions will require the additional security feature?
Transactions currently covered include instant and scheduled funds transfers executed within RBS N.V. and to beneficiaries in other Banks (through NEFT & RTGS). It also includes instant and future scheduled bill payments and payments made by selecting RBS Net-Banking as a payment option while doing online shopping. Existing scheduled bill payments will not require this addition security feature. Shortly, this feature will cover more online activities.

d What happens when one either forgets the answer(s) or keys the incorrect answer(s)?
Entering an incorrect answer to the randomly thrown question thrice will lead to the blocking of the user’s transaction password. The user can unblock it only by either creating a new transaction password online using his / her Debit Card, by contacting the 24X7 BBP or by visiting the nearest RBS N.V. branch. Post online generation / receipt of new pin customer can log in again. The security questions will have to be chosen and answered again. *Please note that on entering an incorrect security answer once, the customer will have to reinitiate the transaction from the start. Eg. In case of transfers, if the customer inputs a wrong security answer, the customer shall need to click on the transfer button again to reinitiate the transaction.

d What happens when the transaction password is locked out?
In the event of a transaction password being keyed incorrectly thrice; only the transaction password will be blocked. The transaction password can be generated online by the user employing his / her Debit Card details, by contacting the 24X7 BBP or by visiting the nearest RBS N.V. branch. Post online generation / receipt of new pin the customer can log in again. Please note that for generation of an online password; the ‘PASSWORD ONLINE’ option provided in the left menu should be used. If accidently the ‘FORGOT SECURITY ANSWER’ is clicked; then apart from creating a fresh transaction password, the security questions will have to be chosen and answered again.

d What if one has forgotten the answer to only one of the three security questions but still remembers the answers to the other two. Do we have the option of skipping the question the answer to which has been forgotten and opt for another question while executing the transaction.
This additional security feature has been introduced to further enhance safety of online transactions. While doing certain transactions, in addition to the transaction password, the customer will be asked any one of the three security questions chosen - answers for which as stored, will only be known to the customer. Moreover, these questions are randomly asked. In case the question asked is the one to which the answer is not know by you, then the customer will need to reinitiate the entire transaction for the security question to change. However, in case the customer does not remember all your answers, the he/she will need to recreate the transaction password and redo the security questions by clicking on ‘FORGOT SECURITY ANSWER’.
